Welcome to DNS Down

WELL KNOWN Links
(HOSTS file install)

All links entered into the added on the home page, find their way to this file for public distribution.  Here you may download a copy. This file has been submitted by customers for public use.  If you click the links on the page, you will find some are good, some are bad, and some hosts are just retarded. If you wish to use these links in combination with your own links, we recommend you install this file first, then run dnsdown.exe, to combine our public links with your private links. If you wish to copy the hosts file from your browser screen, click here, (if you have added entries to the home page,) this will display the newest hosts file, then simply edit it on your machine, and add this screen scrape. (This is the easiest way for Apple or Linux users.)

DISCLAIMER: The installation of many links may slow down the speed of making connections. If you just wish to test, make a backup copy of your hosts file first. The hosts file, may be edited directly to dispose of unwanted or unneeded links that may slow down your connection attempts. This does not slow down your internet speed, just the initial connection attempt. Future versions will incorporate a standby mode.

Instructions:  Download the file to a known location, we recommend c:\dnsdown

(If you want an easy installer batch file, here's one, this copies hosts ---> hosts.bak, then replaces it with the downloaded hosts file, automatically. Both files will have to be downloaded to the same containing folder on your machine...)

Rename the file from hosts.exe to hosts (This is just a trick to force a download, it is not an exe)

(Some users of Spybot Search and Destroy already have entries in their hosts file. This will not be damaged, dnsdown client only adds to the hosts file. If you run dnsdown more than once, we suggest you clear out the hosts file before running multiple times. Future versions will provide features to do this. )

Copy the file to the folder:

c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
(Linux/OS X: /etc/hosts)

Thats all there is to it. You now have access to the well known hosts/sites, regardless of DNS status.
